Annotations for Give Em Hell Kid

Lyric: Do you care at all?
Annotation:
Our main character realizes that other people probably don’t care about his problems anywhere near as much as they care about their own. Even if his problems are much more serious

Lyric: [Intro]
Annotation:
In the iTunes version of this song, Gerard screams this before the intro: Kid… Kid?! Brothers and sisters! Put your hands together, because I feel a war coming on… The devil knows where you live… And the devil knows where you’ll find me!

Lyric: (You’re beautiful)
Annotation:
This line is a line form the male Demolition Lover contradicting the previous line where the other lover does not want to be clingy or grabbing for attention. He contradicts her in that he almost wants her to do that, or it could just be him expressing his love. On another hand, it could be part of the reason he’s on this mission, as if he’s explaining himself to the reader.

Lyric: Well, I’m a total wreck, and almost every day
Like the firing squad or the mess you made
Annotation:
These lines are the first ones coming from the female Demolition Lover, who is left abandoned when her husband goes off to kill a thousand evil souls. The “firing squad” is pretty ironic — she doesn’t know he’s doing this, let alone that he’s doing it for her. She blames him for their current situation, hence “the mess you made.”

Lyric: [Verse 2]
Annotation:
The second verse, second chorus, and outro seem to be from the perspective of the female Demolition Lover, who is alone and oblivious when her lover is off killing a thousand evil souls.

Lyric: [Verse 1]
Annotation:
The first verse and chorus seem to be told from the perspective of the male Demolition Lover, the album’s protagonist who must bring the Devil a thousand evil souls to be reunited with his wife.

Lyric: Oh, baby, here comes the sound
Annotation:
A proper introduction to the track. It also foreshadows the high energy present throughout the song.

Lyric: Your dreams and your hopeless hair (Oh, woah-oh)
We never wanted it to be this way for all our lives
Annotation:
The people around the couple have frivolous problems, like worrying about their hair. Meanwhile, the Demolition Lovers have a serious issue — they can’t be reunited until the album’s protagonist delivers a thousand evil souls to the Devil. In the end he must kill himself to fulfill the deal, so he spent the rest of his life being a murderer rather than with his lover, like he wanted to.

Lyric: If you were here, I’d never have a fear
So go on, live your life
But I miss you more than I did yesterday
Annotation:
In the story told throughout Three Cheers, a man must kill a thousand evil souls to be reunited with his lover after making a deal with the devil. While he’s off committing murder, his female companion is unaware of his actions and whereabouts. She misses him greatly as she believes he is dead, but doesn’t want to be a burden and demand attention, as shown by the line “go on, live your life.”

Lyric: Some might say we are made from the sharpest things you say
Annotation:
We are shaped by the way people have hurt us. All the little remarks people make, or the little actions that seem insignificant at the time, slowly build up and affect our character. This line lends itself to another track from this album, “Thank You For The Venom.” It could have been an inspiration point for the band’s 2006 song “The Sharpest Lives,” which is about someone who feels like they’ve made themself a monster after being severely hurt.

Lyric: Well, don’t I look pretty walking down the street
In the best damn dress I own?
Annotation:
Gerard Way has dressed in drag once or twice, mentioning it once in an interview when asked what the funniest thing he’d ever done was. I went to school in drag—in art school—and my day was completely different because everybody thought I was a chick. You should see me as a chick. So I went as a girl, as like an experiment and it worked really well and everyone was really nice to me but I couldn’t talk obviously… I looked hot as a chick! He even tells the tale of a prisoner who is forced to cross-dress in “You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison,” but this is most likely him assuming the role of the petulant, pissed off woman waiting for her man to come back to her.

Lyric: This is how we like to do it in the murder scene
Can we settle up the score?
Annotation:
The Three Cheers album tells the story of a man who must kill a thousand evil souls and bring them to the Devil in order to be reunited with his wife. This is where his deadly adventure begins. This lyric was also the inspiration for the title of their documentary, Life On The Murder Scene.

Lyric: We are young and we don’t care (Oh, woah-oh)
Annotation:
There are 3 possible meanings for this line: This is what the couple felt that others meant by the phrase “young, dumb, and in love.” Their response to being told they’re too young to know what love is. The thought process of people who claim they don’t care about anything. This interpretation could also symbolize the protagonist trying to shrug off his guilt about becoming a murderer.

Lyric: Took a train outta New Orleans
And they shot me full of ephedrine
Annotation:
“Give ‘Em Hell, Kid” is where the main story of the album begins and the protagonist begins his quest to kill a thousand evil souls. He travels to a different town to avoid being seen and caught by someone he knows. New Orleans is an American city best known for its extravagant Mardi Gras celebrations. The city is synonymous with optimism and livelihood, which is pretty much the exact opposite of what the narrator’s life has become. This part of the lyric could have a literal meaning, but it could also have a metaphorical interpretation — the protagonist may be shutting out any emotions he feels to prevent himself from feeling guilt due to his actions. Alternatively, this could symbolize a loss of happiness, since he has been separated from his lover. Ephedrine is a stimulant, a substance that increases alertness, wakefulness, and locomotion. Not only do the effects of this drug mirror the hyped up energy of the song, but if the protagonist had it in his system, it would keep him awake and alert, which could help him complete his task. Funnily, ephedrine was made illegal in the U.S. in April 2004, two months before Three Cheers was released.

Lyric: What’d you call me?
Well, there’s no way I’m kissing that guy
(What’s that? What did you said? Why don’t you say it louder?)
Well, come on, come on, come on, come on
 (Because I can’t hear you)
 Oh, yeah
Annotation:
The man’s lover may have been thrust into an uncomfortable situation with a potential suitor, or others may have told her to find another relationship. Either way, the only man she wants is her lover. Alternatively, this could also be foreshadowing the next two songs. The first of the two is based on a short story titled “A Rose for Emily,” in which a woman kills her fiancee after she suspects he’ll leave her for a man. The second tells of rape in jail. In Life on the Murder Scene, Gerard sings this line as: Just ‘cause you’re bigger than me, Just 'cause you’re smarter than me, Just 'cause you drive a better car than me Does not mean, No way and no how I am sucking you off, For any amount of money
